When you first wake up to brush your teeth, what is the first part of your body that allows you to go to the washroom? Your legs! Although many take legs for granted, but it is actually one of the most important part of our bodies. Without our legs, we are immobile. We are not able to manoeuvre from A to B. Hence, taking care of our legs are really important so that we are able to maintain the feet joint and ligament to strengthen them to be able to mobilise ourselves even up to old age!
I was at talk with Dato Dr Edmund Lee, Ph.D, an Orthotic Specialist at Sunfeet International Rehab Centre.
Sunfeet is founded by Mr Lee Joon Wee to fulfil the wish of the late Mr Lee Yin, to establish an orthotics and prosthetics rehabilitation centre to help more patients with musculoskeletal conditions and physical impairment. Dato' Dr Edmund Lee, son of Mr Lee Joo Wee realises the need to work hand in hand with his father to accomplish his grandfather's dream, hence the establishment of the family business, Sunfeet.
I definitely learnt a lot about my feet from this talk! Did you know that more than 75% of the population will experience foot problems in their lifetime? Like the foundation of a house, your feet support the weight of everything above them. When a small problem develops in your feet, subtle changes can occur in the entire framework of your body. These changes cause a chain reaction throughout your posture while you stand and walk, placing excess stress and strain on joints, muscles and tendons in the feet, knees, hips, or even the lower back.
Do you have any of the following?
1. Localised foot pain
2.Bunions
3. Hammer toes
4. Arch pain
5. Heel pain
6. Knee pain
7. Hip pain
8. Low back pain
At Sunfeet International Rehab Centre their Foot Health Consultant & Specialist understand the body’s movement and structure – known as biomechanics. They use a unique biomechanical assessment system (Dr Edmund Assessment System) to assess and diagnose causes of patients’ lower limb and biomechanical problems.
I had my biomechanical foot evaluation done.
Scanning in progress.
Only took less than a minute to get the feet checked.
The system has its foundations in engineering principles and allows the consultant to determine the underlying cause and effect of biomechanical anomalies, which are then clearly explained to patients. In identifying the underlying cause of pain, they then treat the cause, not just the symptoms. This is not an X-Ray because X-Ray is to check your bones. This analysis is to analyse the alignment of our feet just like car balancing tyre; see whether our feet are balanced and in proper alignment.
There are different types of feet such as:
-Normal Feet
-Pronated Feet
-Flat Feet
-High Arch Feet
The severeness of each type of feet(other than normal of course) is depending on each individual.
My foot analysis report shows that I have Mild Pronated Feet. This is usually why when I stand for long, I have lower back pain and heel pain. Luckily I have found the cause when it's still mild to avoid it from being overpronated(inward rolling of the foot) which can cause injuries to the foot, ankle, kneee and can further affect the pelvis and spine.
For treatment, Sunfeet use custom prescribed orthotic therapy, integrated with other conservative treatment methods like sports rehabilitation and physiotherapy, providing a holistic approach to eliminating pain, fixing issues and ultimately improving well-being.
A custom orthotic(insoles) from Sunfeet will help reduce pain and discomfort by enhancing your body's natural movements. In close partnership with your healthcare practitioner, Sunfeet designs custom orthotics allowing you to stand and walk with balance for a healthy active lifestyle.
The 3D custom orthotics help your body restore a natural balance and normal movement patterns, thereby reducing strain, pain and discomfort. For optimal results, a custom orthotic should be worn on a daily basis inside quality, supportive footwear. Their healthcare practitioner will provide specific instructions on how to gradually increase wearing time for activities of daily living and/or for specific activities such as running or sports. Over time, custom orthotics will bring relief from excessive pressure points, fatigue and pain, allowing you to enjoy daily activities once again.
Trying out the selection of shoes at Sunfeet to cater for specific needs.
Other than that, our diet plays an important part in taking care of our feet as well. Never knew that actually haha!
Dr Edmund laid out a selection of food to fight foot and knee pain. Prevention is always better than cure!
Virgin Olive Oil (behind), Avocado, Mint leaves, Turmeric.
Ginger, Broccoli, Blueberries, Pumpkin seeds.
I actually loveee most of the above food so I was kinda taking care of my legs quite well haha...just need to incorporate more ginger and turmeric in my diet.
With the star host of the day, Dato' Dr Edmund Lee.
