Special Education Week and Autism Awareness Month

There's this post going around in Facebook "Kids with special needs aren't weird or odd. They only want what everyone wants... to be accepted. Can I make a request? Is anyone willing to post this and leave it on your status for at least 1 hour? It is Special Education week & Autism Awareness Month, and this is in honour of all children made in a unique way. Most people will never understand the situation until they face it"

April is Autism Awareness Month. No two kids are alike when it comes to autism. Many people still do not fully understand what Autism is, frankly speaking me neither until probably a year back. It is estimated that one in every 110 children is affected with some sort of autism spectrum disorder, a pervasive developmental disorder that impacts every child uniquely.

Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. It has been commonly noticed that most autistic children are perfectly normal in appearance, but spend their time engaged in puzzling and disturbing behaviours which are markedly different from those of typical children.

It was commonly believed that autism is just a fate that one has to accept. However, the good news is that there are now a wide variety of treatment options which can be very helpful in dealing with autism. Some treatments may lead to great improvement, and others may have little or no effect.

One fundamental issue to be borne in mind is that there is no complete cure for autism XD However, doctors, therapists and special teachers can help children with autism overcome or adjust to many difficulties. The earlier a child starts treatment for autism, the better.

I have never known anyone that is autistic because autistic children are sometimes normal on the outset. In fact, I got to know about autism in movies. I think there's not much awareness about autism and people do not know how to behave among autistic children. Therefore, I think spreading the word is a great thing to do especially when it's Autism Awareness Month!! They just want to be treated like normal children!!
